How to Decipher Boot Sizing

Understanding the various sizing systems for footwear is essential for selecting the appropriately sized boot. This guide provides a comprehensive overview of US, European, and other sizing, as well as the differences between men's and women's sizes and widths.
The US sizing system is primarily used in the United States and is based on a numerical scale. European sizing, on the other hand, utilizes a metric system that is generally one size larger than the corresponding US size. For example, a US men's size 9 is approximately a European size 42. The Mexican sizing system is similar to the US system but typically adds a size increment of one for men and two for women.
It is important to note that there are significant differences between men's and women's sizes. Generally, women's sizes are approximately 1.5 to 2 sizes different than men's sizes. For instance, a men's size 9 would correspond to a women's size 10.5 or 11. Additionally, widths can vary; men's boots are often wider than women's boots. Widths are typically denoted as 'D' for standard width in men's sizes and 'B' for standard width in women's sizes.
The concept of unisex boots has some relevance. Boot styles can be suitable for all genders, but sizing is not. If you are wondering if a boot was originally made for men or women, measure the width at the insole/ball of the foot as well as the length of the boot. This can quickly help determine actual size and gender. Also consider the width noted in the boot shaft. It is rare that a men's boot would have a B width unless it is very narrow. It is also rare that a women's boot would be a D width unless it is very wide. Most women's boots are B/C and most men's boots are C/D/EE.
If you cannot try on a boot to ensure the best fit, it is advisable to measure your foot length and width (see our "FOOT MEASURING GUIDE FOR BOOTS" in the RESOURCE section of our website). After measuring, consult the sizing chart specific to the brand you are considering, as sizing can vary between manufacturers. If that is not available, please see reference charts below. Keep in mind a half size up in a shoe can be as little as 1/4" difference and can often be solved with a shoe insert or thick socks if the boots are just that awesome and you have to have them!
