Frequently asked questions

Are boots unisex?

Yes and no.  Cowboy boots of any size can be worn by men or women - you simply need to know what size you need.  There is not a "unisex" size 7.  If it is a men's size 7, it is likely a women's size 8.5.  Please also note the width - there is a difference!  See our boot sizing chart for details on picking the right size for you.  I would never miss out on the opportunity to own a very special pair of boots simply because it is a men's version versus a women's and vice versa.  With most boots, you really cannot tell the difference - they use the same materials, patterns, and most colors.  Please also keep in mind that boot lengths and widths vary by as little as 1/8" to 1/4" between size lengths and widths.  That is the difference a sock thickness or comfort insole/insert can fill, so shop wisely!  You can almost always wear a half size up, and sometimes a whole size.  We provide many standard measurements in our boot listings to help with this careful consideration as there also can be a small difference in sizing between brands/bootmakers.  Please see our measuring guide resources.

Is buying used boots safe? Why should I buy used over new?

Buying vintage or pre-owned boots isn't just about price — it's often the only way to get certain leathers, patterns, and craftsmanship that simply aren't being made anymore or are too expensive new to add to your collection. Many of the boots we carry were built decades ago using techniques and hides that today's mass production doesn't replicate, so a used pair can actually be a rarer, higher-quality find than something new off the shelf.

Used boots often aren't really that "used". Many have only been worn a few times and are nearly new, especially if the previous owner had several pairs. The bonus is that some of the breaking in is already done for you!

As for safety and quality: every pair we list is inspected and sanitized before it's offered — soles, stitching, welts, and the leather itself — for structural soundness, not just appearance. Boots that need reconditioning, resoling, or minor repair are either addressed before listing or clearly noted, so you know exactly what you're getting.

Leather is also a naturally durable, easy-to-clean material, and a well-made boot is often built to outlast several owners with the right care.

Why don't you have more of the big brand boots?

We gravitate toward boots that show the handwork behind them — small runs, unique hides, and details you won't find twice. Because of that, you'll see fewer of the larger, mass-produced lines on our site; not because we don't respect the brands themselves, but because their newer production is built for consistency and volume rather than one-of-a-kind craftsmanship. That said, we love a great vintage pair — many of those same manufacturers made incredible boots decades ago, and you'll often find those featured here.

What are your items made of?

Boots listed are crafted from high-quality, genuine leather unless otherwise noted.  Other accessories have been developed utilizing durable materials and are as close to natural materials as we can without sacrificing end results.  For products we sell, we ensure that every product meets our strict quality standards.

Do we buy boots?

Yes!  We would love to see your boots and have the opportunity to buy them.  Please keep in mind we prefer boots that are custom made for a specific individual's requirements, are one of a kind/a few of a kind, are vintage, are rare or are unique in color combinations/specialty and exotic leathers/etc.  We also buy new end-of run and unsold new boots from bootmakers. The process is pretty simple – if we like them, we will pay for you to ship them to us and will send you a label.  We will agree on an initial price before shipping.  We reserve the right to make adjustments if there is something unusual that pops up, though it is unlikely. An example would be any boots that have strong odors of cigarette smoke or boots that are shipped folded over/without care.  If you don't agree with the change, we will ship them back.

Do we link to your listings on other sites?

Yes!  We can do that.  Please inquire on the process. Often it is free, and sometimes there are very small fees to list one item or maintain a longer-term link to your online boot store.

Do we have a newsletter?

Yes!  Subscribers get the opportunity to see and buy our latest finds first before they are put on the site for the general public as well as interesting articles on featured boot makers and the history of cowboy boots.  There are some incredible artisans out there and we want to support small local businesses!  Our newsletter will be sent out monthly.  We will not send multiple ads or other campaigns every few days like other sites.  Coming soon we will add another opt-in newsletter called "Boot Candy".  If you opt in, we will send out boots of the week pictures of custom pairs you might never see, new and interesting models from small boot makers around the country also available for purchase and opportunities to buy small, limited edition runs.  Some of them are truly amazing and if you are a boot aficionado, this will put a smile on your face each time one hits your inbox. Plus, you get the chance to buy a rare pair that likely nobody else you know will own!

Do we want to see your very special pair of boots even if they aren't for sale?

Yes!  We will feature special and unique pairs of boots in our newsletters.  If you have something you feel is pretty unique, has a fantastic pattern (like snakeskin), is historic and well-loved (a vintage unique or hard to find pair that is falling apart at the seams and tells a story), or something else, send us a pic!  Please include any information you know about the boots like bootmaker name and model if available and other interesting notes.  In addition to adding items to newsletters, we are building an online boot museum to share the artistry of boot making.
